Phala Phala: ANC accuses DA of wanting a 'constitutional crisis'

ANC MPs say there's no evidence linking President Cyril Ramaphosa to any criminal wrongdoing in the Phala Phala scandal.

There has been a debate in the National Assembly on Tuesday, as the DA seeks to have an ad hoc committee set up to investigate the matter.

Ramaphosa has been under pressure to provide answers since the theft of a large amount of foreign currency from his farm in Limpopo came to light.

He's been accused of covering up the incident. Ramaphosa insists he hasn't done anything wrong.

The ANC's Regina Lesoma has told Parliament their caucus cannot support the DA-led motion.

"It is only the DA that believes the ad hoc committee is not about the president. It is about creating another mechanism working through rumours and the wedge drivers Oliver Tambo that warns us when he was still alive."

"In the context of an agreed process in the National Assembly, we do not need an ad hoc committee, will not be part of the DA coalition’s attempt to plunge us into a constitutional crisis."

DA leader John Steenhuisen said Ramaphosa has always known the ANC and Parliament's presiding officers would rush to shield him from scrutiny.

"The only body with the power to summon all these people and institutions to testify is an ad hoc committee of this Parliament. Given all these things how could anybody still justify blocking the establishment of an ad hoc committee into Phala Phala.

"For the sake of our country, for the integrity of our House and for the people of South Africa lets for once do the right thing."
