People charged to get ahead in Home Affairs queue: reports
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Home Affairs says it's working with police to investigate claims that people are jumping the queue for a fee - at some KZN Home Affairs branches.
There have been reports of people paying R300 or more to individuals who then take them to the front of the line.
Andile Dlamini says he witnessed suspicious activity while standing in line at a Durban branch recently.
"These people kept coming and passing me - I didn't know what was going on. I saw that there was a guy who kept coming out - talking to someone at the back and then they went inside. I'm thinking there's an activity going on here that we are not aware of," he said.
Home Affairs' David Hlabane says it's unacceptable.
"It is against our standard operating procedures - we don't charge people for them to access our services for queuing. It is a practice that is unacceptable," Hlabane said.

Hlabane says they are trying to find out who's involved.
"One other fact which complicates this is the allegations that we are receiving are of what happened outside this office. This makes it even more complex and difficult for the office manager to deal with these things as they happen," he said.
