Payment plans for KZN municipalities owing Umngeni-Uthukela Water R1.5bn
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Umngeni-Uthukela Water has confirmed it’s entered into a payment arrangement with three municipalities which owe it a combined R1.5 billion.

The municipalities, namely Ugu, uThukela and Msunduzi, are among a total of five which are in arrears exceeding 120 days.
Msunduzi is the biggest culprit, owing just over R613 million to the water board, while uMgungundlovu and King Cetshwayo District Municipalities are yet to enter into an arrangement.

The board’s Shami Harichunder says the large amount owed means the entity may not be able to execute its mandate to the fullest.
"This is quite a serious situation because a situation of this nature impacts on cash flow of the organisation, and it also impacts the ability of the organisation to have profits.
"Some of the amounts will have to be written off, and that impacts on revenue and on profit. We are hoping that these payment plans are adhered to so that we are able to recover some of the money that is owed to the organisation."
