The law firm was brought on board by the previous administration to look into possible corruption after the Special Investigating Unit found there had been irregular use of municipal infrastructure grant funding.

After the new administration took over, invoices from Mhlanga Attorneys were flagged and Papas said there was suspicion prices were inflated.

The mayor says the firm claims it's been defamed and is threatening legal action.

"Our job as a municipality is to interrogate invoices, contracts, work that has been done and to ensure whether or not there is value for money and to ensure that public funds are spent on public good and we are not taking advantage in any certain way.
