The municipality says it staged several roadblocks in areas including Florida Road, Phoenix and Durban North and KwaDabeka.
Briefing the media, eThekwini Metro Police's Steve Middleton said their roadblocks spanned five days.
"We have 15 583 people who exceeded the speed limit within eThekwini. I will give you two speeds specifically which makes you think that if that car had gone out of control, it would have killed any one of our children. In Musgrave, within an 80km zone, a car travelled 161km/h while on North Coast Road - a 60km zone - 160km/h was recorded," he said.

Middleton says alcohol still plays a major part in how citizens choose to enjoy themselves. He says alcohol is not a problem that's only limited to the roads.
"No alcohol is allowed on the beach but we do know that alcohol is still brought to the beach. That's why we have regular roadblocks and vehicle checks. The aim of enforcement during that time is not to arrest you and put you in jail but to educate you. What we do is have vehicle checks along the beachfront and other areas were we kindly ask you - not to come with your alcohol, to leave it somewhere else and enjoy the shores in a drinking free manner," he said.
