Outgoing AG Kimi Matwetu dies after cancer battle

Outgoing auditor-general Kimi Makwetu has died following a long battle with lung cancer.

It’s understood the 54-year-old Makwetu was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2018. 


Makwetu succumbed to the illness in hospital on Wednesday.  


The office of the auditor-general confirmed the news in a statement.

“As the national audit office, we join the Makwetu family in mourning his death,” it said. 


“We ask the public to keep the family in their thoughts as they come to terms with his passing, and to give them the privacy and space to deal with his passing.” 


Makwetu’s death comes just weeks before his term as AG would have come to an end.
