Other SABC divisions should retract retrenchment letters, demands Bemawu

President of the Broadcasting Electronic Media and Allied Workers Union (Bemawu) Hannes du Buisson says more divisions within the SABC should withdraw the retrenchment letters to staff members.
Du Buisson’s comments come Group Executive for News and Current Affairs Phathiswa Magopeni confirmed on Tuesday that she would be retracting retrenchment letters to staff in her department.
“There is no different process that was followed with any other division. There was no proper consultation so the rest of the organisation must follow suit and their letters have to be withdrawn,” Du Buisson says.
Emotional scenes played out in the SABC newsroom on Tuesday, with journalists expressing anger and disappointment at the manner in which the retrenchment process has been handled.
Journalists were citing a lack of consultation by the SABC.
The SABC is expected to retrench 400 employees after recording a loss of R511 million for the year to March.
This is a 6% decline in losses from the previous year.
