Oscar release 'sends the wrong message'
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
A KwaZulu-Natal women's group feels that Oscar Pistorius' release under correctional supervision is likely to send the wrong message to other offenders.
The former Paralympian is to be released on Tuesday, as confirmed by the Department of Correctional Services.
Pistorius was sentenced last year to five years behind bars for culpable homicide after shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.
He will now spend the rest of his sentence under house arrest.
Cookie Edward, who is with the KZN Network on Violence Against Women, says this is likely to make other similar offenders believe they can escape serving harsh and lengthy sentences.
''This is not setting an example and we don't think that the legal system has really given proper thought to having him released so early because it's not an example to other men.
''After this decision, other men would feel that they can do what Oscar did and be able to walk out of prison and tomorrow serve the rest of their sentence doing community service. It's not a good example at all,'' she said.
