Opposition parties agree on impeachment committee, no-confidence motion in Ramaphosa

A forum of all opposition political parties in Parliament says Tuesday’s National Assembly sitting - that will consider the report by the independent Section 89 panel - must ensure a resolution is taken.

What they want is the establishment of an impeachment committee.

The opposition parties met on Friday to discuss the report which found that President Cyril Ramaphosa may have violated the constitution and his oath of office.

The president has been under fire since June, when former spy boss Arthur Fraser filed a complaint with the police, alleging that he covered up a burglary on his farm in 2020.

The forum, which comprises the ATM, DA, EFF, and the IFP - among other parties - has agreed on a series of measures that need to be taken.

They say that based on the preliminary evidence of serious misconduct against the president - a National Assembly vote is a must for the commencement of the impeachment process.

They say MPs should insist this process begins immediately.

The group’s also asked the Democratic Alliance - as the official opposition party - to table a motion of no confidence against Ramaphosa based on the prima facie evidence that he violated the constitution.

If the DA is unable to do this, the EFF will go ahead and table the motion before Tuesday’s sitting.

The forum has criticised the delays in investigations by law enforcement teams and other institutions.

The parties also repeated calls for the president to step down, to allow these probes to be completed without fear of repercussions, as the heads of these investigating agencies are presidential appointees.
