Opposition calls on eThekwini to probe officials for street lights theft

Opposition political parties in KZN insist eThekwini should start investigating some of its own officials in the wake of two arrests and the seizure of dozens of municipal street lights.

The suspects were caught at the border with Mozambique transporting 52 LED street lights, labelled property of eThekwini at the weekend.

They've since appeared before the Emanguzi Magistrate's Court.

Visvin Reddy, who's with the African Democratic Change, says investigations need to start on the inside.

"This is happening because there's a serious lack of control within the city and poor management, we call on the city manager and mayor to act immediately, and treat this matter with the urgency it deserves."

DA provincial leader Francois Rodgers says they're still waiting for the city Integrity and Investigations Unit report on the R579 million rand contract to repair Durban's street lights.

"Our way forward here would be to call upon and write to the city manager and ask from him a forensic investigation into the contract to be tabled or distributed to councillors so that we can get to the bottom of this endless corruption and incompetence which comes to the cost of residents of eThekwini."
