Online child protection in the spotlight
Updated | By Zongile Mthimkhulu
The Film and Publications Board feels South Africa must urgently respond to the issues of child safety online.
Currently underway in Johannesburg is Southern Africa's first ever conference on online child protection and cyber safety initiatives.
The board's Janine Raftopoulos says cyber-bullying, human trafficking and terrorist recruitment of children over the internet is on the rise.
She says parents must monitor their children's activities online.
''Most children today have access to anything and everything because of the internet and the space for the most part is generally unregulated.
''Along with that parents [must be] be vigilant and educated in ensuring that they supervise those particular tools for their children.
''Yes, there may be pros but at the same they could be lured into the wrong spaces at the wrong time,'' he said.
