It's alleged a group of four men hijacked a minibus taxi, laden with passengers, and then drove to the beach where they abandoned the taxi and its passengers.

Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says the gang then went on to rob several people at North Beach.

"During the process, it is alleged that the police officers who were on duty patrolling the area saw the incident and approached these suspects. The suspects began to shoot towards the members and the members retaliated," Zwane said.

One suspect was shot and killed.

Zwane says another suspect tried escaping into the sea but was caught, while the other two fled.

"At this stage, we are still searching for the other two that managed to flee the scene. The arrested suspects will appeal in the Durban Magistrate's Court soon - facing charges of hijacking as well as robbery."
