KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services' spokesperson, Robert Mckenzie says one person sustained fatal injuries while walking in Empangeni on the north coast.

"Several people were walking along the road when the wind blew a tree over, which landed on electricity cables. One person sustained fatal injuries, paramedics treated one person for serious injuries and another for minor injuries," he said.

Gale force winds dealt a devastating blow to parts of the province, with winds of up to 65kmph uprooting trees and blowing roofs off properties. In Durban, flying debris caused damage to cars and homes.

Mckenzie says five people were hurt in several incidents on the CBD.

Damage was reported from Port Edward on the south coast to Richards Bay on the north coast and inland to Pietermaritzburg.

Disaster teams remain on high alert following a warning of heavy rain throughout the weekend.

The Department of Co-operative Governance's Lennox Mabaso is urging people to stay indoors.

"We want them to be on high alert and to make sure that the first form of defence under these conditions is to run for safety," he said.

Marshall Security's Kyle van Reenen says they were inundated with calls for help from the greater Durban North and surrounding areas.

"We've seen roof sheeting being ripped off of buildings in the West Street area, as well as in the Briardene, Escombe and Pinetown areas where steel roof sheeting was completely lifted off buildings and blown into the road. We've also seen trees and street poles uprooted. A tree in the Mount Edgecombe area landed on a Mercedes Benz and caused substantial damage to the vehicle," he said.
