Omicron hospitalisations at least half compared to previous waves: NICD

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases says the rate of hospitalisation as a result of the Covid-19 Omicron variant is at least half the level that was seen during the previous waves.

Presenting on hospitalisations, Dr Waasila Jassat says while they have seen a rapid weekly increase in hospitalisations across all provinces, this is far less than the reported cases. 


The NICD was presenting its research on its early evaluations into the omicron variant in the country on Wednesday.


"Nationally, while you see cases are peaking at a higher rate than they did in the Delta wave, admissions have reached probably half the rate that they reached in the Delta wave and deaths have not increased much when compared to the Delta wave peak. 


"In the third wave, admission have a week lag to cases and deaths have a two week lag to cases."
