SA's Covid positivity rate jumps to 30.6%

South Africa has recorded more than 21 000 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the tally of confirmed cases to 3 353 106.

The positivity rate for Wednesday stood at 30.6% - an increase from the 27.6% reported the previous day. 


Earlier this week, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and the Western Cape surpassed Gauteng as the country’s epicentre.


KZN recorded 5 411 cases in the latest 24-hour reporting cycle.  


The Western Cape follows closely with 4 609 new cases, while Gauteng recorded 3 807 cases.


The Northern Cape remains the least hit with 502 new cases.


The latest spike at coastal destinations comes amid an influx of tourists at the peak of the holiday season. 


“The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal (26%), followed by Western Cape (22%). Gauteng accounted for 18% and Eastern Cape 11%. Free State and North West each accounted for 6% and Mpumalanga 5%. Limpopo accounted for 4% and Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today’s new cases,” read the statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD). 


Close to 100 fatalities were also reported.
