Olympic cyclist Burry Stander's family hopes stolen bike is returned
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The family of Olympic cyclist, Burry Stander are hoping the bicycle stolen from his memorial site is returned.
It was erected at the corner of Stott Street and the R102 in Shelly Beach - where Stander was fatally struck by a taxi in 2013.
It's the bike Stander used at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
It's believed it was stolen last Tuesday.
The athlete's mother, Mandie Stander says this makes a mockery of his memory.
"It is a very emotional spot and seeing the bike is gone its just mixed feelings again and it's also his birthday on Wednesday you know, this time of year is not such a good time and it just added to all of that."
She says the bike which was painted white to represent a 'ghost bike' was a symbol of awareness - to remind people to drive safely.
"No, we all need to respect one another and just take a little bit of time and if it can save one family the heartache that we are going through."
Stander would have turned 33 this week.
