Officials received tip-off prior to Westville Prison security sweep
The Department of Correctional Services is currently searching Westville Prison's Medium A Section following an anonymous tip-off this morning - that unauthorised weapons had been smuggled into the facility.
Regional spokesperson for the department, Thulani Mdluli say they acted upon an anonymous tip-off.
"We received an anonymous call on our landline this morning and we acted on that by making sure that we call all security agencies to come and assist us in Medium A.
"As part of the mandate of ensuring safety and security, we conduct such operations unannounced. At this stage, all security agencies are conducting searches. In the interest of security, we are not able to provide more information on that," regional spokesperson for the department, Thulani Mdluli said.
Mdluli says the department will be able to provide more details once the search is complete.
