Officials to monitor environmental impact of #Durbanfire

KZN Environmental Affairs officials say they will take steps to ensure that clean-up operations at the Rossburgh warehouse don't harm the environment around the site.

The department's Bongani Tembe says they had only recently learned through Newswatch that some waste - that was being cleaned up - had been washed into the Umhlathuze canal which flows into the Umhlathuze River.
"We were not aware of this, we'll surely make sure that our team goes there and we'll ensure that the company that is busy carrying out the operation is aware of this development so that our people's lives are not in danger," he said.

The information was confirmed by environmental group, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance, which had warned of the threat posed to the environment after speaking to communities in the area.
Durban firefighters worked tirelessly for several days to put out the fire last month.
