The university the Oval Residence had been shut for a few weeks prior to the fire - for safety reasons.

Nzimande has called on UKZN's management to work closely with law enforcement officials to find the culprits.

Higher Education spokesperson, Ishmael Mnisi said: "Minister Nzimande further calls upon the university community - both students and staff - to isolate, identify and expose these criminals who continue to vandalise the university property.

"The minister further said that these criminals must be totally removed from our institutions as they do not deserve to be within our institutions, but belong to jail."
