Nzimande announces fee hikes for university, accommodation

The Department of Higher Education and Training has announced increases in university fees and student accommodation ahead of the 2022 academic year.

The announcement was made Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande on Tuesday, during a press briefing in Tshwane.
The briefing was meant to highlight the department's state of readiness for the year.
According to Nzimande, tuition fees will increase by a maximum of 4.23% while accommodation fees will increase by 6.23%.

"We recognise that the long-term stability and sustainability of the sector relies on a significant measure on tuition and residence fee income to universities, and we are working on a fee regulatory policy framework."
Over 1 million enrollments have been received for the 2022 academic year, with first time registrations being projected at 208 299.
