Nzimande addresses claims of truck drivers shortage
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Transport Minister says there is no truth to remarks that South Africa is facing a shortage of local truck drivers.
Blade Nzimande has addressed the media in Durban, after attacks on foreign drivers on some of KwaZulu-Natal's major routes.
He says according to trucking companies, there aren't enough local drivers which is why they're employing foreign nationals.
Nzimande presented some of the recommendations by an inter-ministerial task team on disputes over the hiring of illegal foreign nationals.
"Our laws do not prevent the employment of foreign nationals but there are processes that must be followed. For instance, there must be proof that the skills we are importing are scarce - are not to be found. We want those laws to be followed and enforced," he said.

Meanwhile the National Truck Drivers Foundation says it's happy with the recommendations and will give the department the space to implement them.
It says drivers are not xenophobic but the issue is that many of them are sitting at home without jobs.
