Numsa, Vavi expulsions confirmed

Numsa and Zwelinzima Vavi's expulsions from Cosatu have been officially confirmed after the majority of delegates at the trade union federation's national congress voted to have the metal workers union and the former general-secretary thrown out.

In Numsa's case 904 votes were for the expulsion with 67 against.

One person abstained from the voting process.

Earlier Fawu's Katishi Masemola tabled a motion to have Numsa reinstated.

''If we all agree that we want unity and cohesion in this federation, then we all should be allowed to air whatever we want to raise at this congress and we should be protected by yourself, President.

''This is what we, as Fawu, want to say: you cannot dismiss an affiliate or workers for taking a particular view politically. The federation can't do that,'' he said.

But Satawu was one of the unions that were in favour of the expulsions, particularly that of Vavi.

Satawu's representative says they are backing the federation's decision.

''We are satisfied that a central executive committee indeed applied its mind and what is [contained in] section 10.4 of the constitution of this federation.

''We therefore want to say "goodbye to Zwelinzima Vavi,'' he said.
