NUM threatens to pull support for ANC ahead of polls

The National Union of Mineworkers says it can no longer guarantee it will vote for the ANC in the upcoming elections.

The NUM briefed media in Johannesburg earlier on the president’s announcement that Eskom would be unbundled.
General-Secretary, David Sipunzi says they were not consulted.
"We were ignored, we were taken by shock when the president announced in his SONA that there will be an unbundling of Eskom as though we are not a stakeholder at Eskom. We barged into Luthuli House last week as the national office bearers to ask what is this that we've seen on TV," Sipunzi said.
Sipunzi says they may have to call a special conference to discuss the Eskom matter.
"We've spent millions campaigning for the ANC. As the leaders, we cannot ignore the cry of the members that say: ‘If the ANC is doing this to us, why should we continue with our support for the ANC?’. We can no longer guarantee and we are not in a position to say without fear that NUM members are definitely going to vote for the ANC, they are grumbling. There are job losses," he said.
