During his State of the Nation Address last week, the president revealed plans to separate the functions at the power utility into three entities.

But Cosatu's Gauteng Secretary Dumisani Dakile has told Today - workers marched to the offices of the South African Minerals Council that it's not going to happen.

"There is no unbundling of Eskom that is going to take place while we are still alive, comrades. We must defend Eskom - even it means we are to defend Eskom with our blood. The commercialisation of Eskom must come to an end," he said.

Eskom CEO, Phakamani Hadebe received Cosatu’s memorandum.

Meanwhile, a teacher - who was one of the participants today's Cosatu March in Durban - says they don't believe the Education Department is experiencing budget constraints.

Workers who're marching against job losses have now arrived at the Durban City Hall.

Sixteen unions are taking part in the national strike, called by federation Cosatu.

Teacher union, SADTU is among them.

This teacher told Newswatch they’re demonstrating over lack of security at KZN schools which has resulted in a number of armed perpetrators coming onto premises and causing harm to pupils and educators.
