Northern KZN municipality placed under administration

The department says it took the decision as governance at the ANC-run municipality has collapsed and as a result, the delivery of services to residents suffered.  

The department's Lennox Mabaso says they had on numerous times offered their support but municipal authorities kept ignoring the rules.

Mabaso says an administrator will be appointed to assume the powers of the mayor and municipal manager. 

"The situation had crippled the municipality in such as manner that they have been unable to deliver on the constitutional mandate. Some of the problems the municipality was facing included the inconsistent supply of water, the poor state of municipal infrastructure - such as roads and electricity - and poor governance and administration which was bordering on this municipality being run more like a banana institution," he said.
