The woman says the community has no problem with foreigners, that the man's only been staying in the area for two months and that he is well-liked.

"The police came and he was taken to the hospital. He is still in hospital now. He is a very nice guy, whenever you have nothing and you go to him, he will give you and you pay him at the end of the month. The community is very happy with him," she said.

Police are investigating charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property following the attack.

No arrests have been made.
