No cases of avian flu detected in KZN yet

While no cases of avian flu have been detected in KZN - authorities are advising farmers to treat any increase in poultry deaths as potential avian flu - until proven otherwise.

Another outbreak has been recorded - this time at a commercial chicken farm in Randfontein on Gauteng's West Rand.
Last month, around 300 chickens were culled on a farm in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg.

Spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture, Reggie Ngcobo has urged those who own poultry to immediately report all increases in deaths to the state veterinarian or the relevant provincial director.
"You will recall that preceding this outbreak, four outbreaks were detected on other commercial chicken properties so that a total of five outbreaks.
"All affected farms have been quarantined with controlled measures being implemented. No human infection due to this circulating strain has been reported."
