Nine suspects taken in following violent Shallcross protest

Nine people have today been arrested for public violence following protest action in Burlington Heights, Shallcross.
This after violent unrest in the area at the weekend.
According to reports, an 18-year-old man was shot dead during a confrontation with the municipality's Security Management Unit and a private security company over a plot of vacant land that the community was trying to clear to build houses on.

Police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala says a case of public violence is being investigated.
"This morning, there was a protest on Burlington Road in Shallcross where approximately 250 people barricaded the road and the protesters burned tyres and placed trees across the road. A total of nine suspects were arrested," she said.
