NFP to challenge release of final election results

The National Freedom Party (NFP) is heading to the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday afternoon to try to halt the IEC's announcement of the final election results.

The Electoral Commission said it would officially release the results of Monday's local government polls at 6pm.

But the NFP wants the briefing stalled over what it feels is a discrepancy in the party's ward numbers.

Secretary-general Canaan Mdletshe says they've asked for a recount in northern KZN's eDumbe Local Municipality.

The NFP is convinced it's won seven wards there instead of six, as published by the IEC.

"We are challenging this in court. We have approached our lawyers and we expect them to go to court this afternoon. All we want is the recount of Ward 1 & 3 because our own assessment and counting is that we were robbed.

"We laid a formal complaint with the commission yesterday [Wednesday] before 1pm. We then communicated with our lawyers.

"And after consulting with our legal team, they advised us to take the matter to court, hence our lawyer is preparing papers to file in the Pietermaritzburg High Court this afternoon," says Mdletshe.

"We want to halt the announcement of the final results scheduled to take place this afternoon.

"The results cannot be announced or pronounced before our matter is resolved. We worked hard campaigning and we know what we deserve in eDumbe, hence our decision to go to court."
