NEWS JUST IN: Ramnarain sentenced to 10 years for M4 crash
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
A Durban Magistrate has handed local plumber, Omesh Ramnarain 10 years following a fatal crash on the M4 near Durban North that claimed the lives of two cyclists.
Richards da Silva and Jared Dwyer were killed after Ramnarain lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into the cyclists while on an early morning ride in February 2016.
Ramnarain was convicted of two counts of culpable homicide in 2016.
Magistrate Anand Maharaj described the loss of life on South Africa's roads as being beyond comprehension and said the time has come for the courts to take a tougher stand.
He has given Ramnaran five years for each of the counts of culpable homicide he was convicted of.
The sentences will run consecutively.
Ramnarain's drivers license has also been suspended for a year.
Maharaj said himself that he feels the sentence is exemplary and one he hopes will act as a deterrent.
