Newcastle power problems giving residents sleepless nights

Tourism and wedding venue entrepreneur Christo van der Vyver says they don't know what's going to happen next.

This after, the power utility threatened to switch off the northern KwaZulu-Natal town's lights for six hours this week over unpaid bills since 2017.  


The town owes the power utility R200 million. The municipality says some residents and businesses don't pay for services, while it's also faced with a high number of illegal connections.

The local municipality applied for a court interdict to try and stop this from happening.  


The Pietermaritzburg High Court will later this week decide whether or not to grant an interdict to stop planned power cuts by Eskom.

Van der Vyver says the power cuts will affect the day-to-day running of his business.
