Eskom says Newcastle may plunge into darkness over pending dues

Talks are continuing between Newcastle and Eskom officials in a bid to avoid the power cuts in the municipality next week.
The town owes the power utility R200 million. The municipality says some residents and businesses don't pay for services, while it's also faced with a high number of illegal connections.

Officials in Newcastle were issued with a notice a month ago.
Since then talks between the power utility, lawyers and municipal officials have been ongoing in hopes of finding a solution.
Eskom's Agnes Mlambo says if a solution isn't found in the next 48 hours then Newcastle will be plunged into darkness from Monday.
