Newcastle official due in court
A high-ranking official from the Newcastle municipality is expected in court tomorrow for his alleged role in the murder of a regional ANC Youth League leader.
The suspect was arrested on Friday in connection with the 2016 killing of Wandile Ngubeni.
There has been speculation the official in custody is Newcastle mayor Ntothuko Junda Mahlaba.
Reneilwe Serero - who speaks for the Police Minister - would not be drawn on the identity of the Newcastle suspect.
"I can confirm that one senior official from the Newcastle municipality has been arrested by the Political Task Team operating in KwaZulu-Natal. The arrest is in relation to murder. Unfortunately at this stage, I can not divulge the name of the suspect," she says.
