Newborn baby found in pit latrine in Taylor's Halt

A concealment of birth case is being investigated after a newborn was found in a pit latrine in Taylor's Halt near Pietermaritzburg.
Residents of Mafakathini alerted authorities after hearing cries from the toilet over the weekend.

KZN SAPS's Jay Naicker says it is suspected that the baby was dumped by her mother.
"The police's Search and Rescue Unit responded and assisted the community in rescuing the child from the pit latrine before the child and the 16-year-old mother were taken to hospital for medical attention.
"The docket was handed over to the Plessislaer Family Violence Child Protection Sexual Offences Unit who will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident."
