The Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize announced that there will be a new shorter medical emergency number.

He announced this at the launch of National Emergency Medical Services Day in Wentworth on Thursday.

He says the number will be easily remembered by children and adults.
"Once the person has used that number, we can then separate the call as to which of the services need to be given attention to.This will be either the police, fire brigade or emergency care."
"We made it simpler so that even children can use it and it's easier to remember. This new number will be standardised right across the country," he said.
