The State's Cheryl Naidu is questioning Dr Rosanne Hardy in the murder trial underway in the Durban High Court.

The three-year-old girl's mother and grandmother are accused of her murder

Yesterday - Hardy told the court that the girl's mother is cognitively impaired and was unable control her behaviour or exercise judgment and reasoning.

In a heated cross-examination, Naidu put it to Hardy that the accused came across as able to function when on the stand - even giving comprehensive answers that showed a deep level of understanding.

But Hardy disagreed - saying she stood by what's in her report. Hardy told the court some of the mother's responses were straightforward while others suggested she's not taking responsibility or thinking for herself.

Hardy said the accused would sometimes appear normal and then do the most bizarre things at other times.

Naidu asked Hardy if the mother should not be held accountable because of her cognitive impairment.

The neuro-psychologist would however not give her opinion - saying it was not her job to do so.
