Nehawu threatens to shut down forensic pathology services in KZN

The Department of Health in KwaZulu-Natal says it's attending to the memorandum of demands it's received from Nehawu, as the union threatens to shut down all forensic pathology services in the province.

Workers picketed outside the department's offices in Pietermaritzburg this week.

Nehawu's Mazwi Vilakazi says they have several grievances, including working conditions at mortuaries.

"This demand was the immediate implementation of the sustainable model for the recommendation of forensic services.

"We also call for an immediate end of salary disparities within the forensic directory."

"We also demand compliance with the occupational health and safety act by fixing broken fridges where coffins are kept by ensuring air conditioners are working properly."

Vilakazi says they've given health officials until next week Friday to respond to their demands.

"Should they fail to respond to our call we will embark on an industrial action and we will stop operation at all these mortuaries."

The department says the matter will be handled.
