Transnet: More staff to return over next few days

Transnet says it expects more employees to return to work over the next few days.

The state-owned logistics giant says around 70% of its pre-strike workforce came back this week. 

 

It's after labour union Untu signed a multi-year wage deal bringing an end to an almost two-week-long work stoppage.

 

Satawu members are carrying on with their industrial action. 

 

Transnet's Ayanda Shezi says they've been speaking to customers about helping one another clear the port and rail systems backlogs.

 "On the rail, we are taking safety assessments of the network as well as inspecting the rolling stock to ensure that the trains are declared safe. 

 

“At the ports, we continue to clear the backlog of vessels on anchorage and alongside the key, including break bulk and containers. The evacuation of imports out of the ports is also continuing with the focus on perishables and time-sensitive cargo."
