Nehawu to down tools despite interdict
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Trade union Nehawu says its indefinite
nationwide public service strike is going ahead, with the KZN protest set to
begin in Pietermaritzburg on Monday morning.
The decision comes despite the strike being interdicted by government.
The health and allied workers union says all government facilities will be shut down until their demands are heard. They are unhappy over the government's unilateral decision last year to impose a three percent wage increase.
The Department of Public Service and Administration obtained a court interdict, but Nehawu says its legal team filed an application for leave to appeal the decision on Sunday afternoon.
The union's Mazwi Vilakazi says the action will go ahead as planned.

"We are aware that the employer is trying to use their dirty tricks to derail Nehawu. This automatically suspends the court order until a lift of appeal is determined. You'll remember the employer, which is the government, unilaterally implemented a 3% increase instead of 10%, which was the primary demand for the workers.
“So we don't even want to engage in the new negotiations before they implement or give what is due to the workers."
