Health Dept asks Eskom to spare 14 KZN hospitals from load shedding
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The Health Department
says it's submitted to Eskom a list of over 200 hospitals that it wants to be considered for exemption from load shedding.
Currently, 76 hospitals in the country - 14 of them in KZN - are spared from the rolling blackouts.
Health Minister Joe Phaahla says the department is also working with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research to roll out more generators and solar panels to other facilities.
"Our teams will be working under this process with Eskom and all the municipalities to speed up the processes of requiring all these alternative lines which can exempt many of our health facilities."
KZN premier unhappy with police’s handling of a child abuse case
KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has welcomed the arrest of a 19-year-old man alleged to have sexually abused five children in KwaNongoma but says police should have taken the matter more seriously.
The girls, aged between five and 12, are said to have been abused in October.
The premier has thanked the community members who came forward.
She says children and their families are receiving psycho-social support.
“We wish to condemn the behaviour of the police who did not treat the matter urgently when it was initially reported by the members of the community and families.
"We urge the police management to investigate this matter and implement consequence management on those who are found guilty of turning a blind eye and deaf ear for this pressing case.”
