The Department of Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal says it was alerted by a passer-by who said they had heard the elderly woman's cries for help.
Social workers were sent to the residence on Tuesday and found Sizakele Siziba lying on a bed pleading for food.
Spokesperson Mhlabunzima Memela says, according to reports from neighbours, the woman was living with a younger relative who left her in a terrible condition.

He says Siziba has been taken to a home for the elderly, where she will be provided with support.
"The information that we have received from the neighbours as well is that they have been helping her to provide her with food which is also surprising us because we provide grants for old people.
"Moving forward, as our social workers are still conducting their investigation, we'll have to find out who has been collecting the money for Gogo Siziba and we will have to open a case against that person."
