NATU calls for delay in teachers' return to school over fear of COVID-19 spread

There are calls for the return of educators to school to be pushed back by several days to allow those who've been marking matric exams time to isolate.

Senior school management teams and non-teaching staff are expected back at work on Monday.


Teachers will report for duty on the 1st of February.


National Teachers Union General Secretary Cynthia Barnes says there have been dozens of COVID-19 cases among matric exam markers.

She says if they return at the same time as other teachers - schools will be a breeding ground for coronavirus.


The union is proposing that school management return on 8th February and teachers two days later. 


"As the teachers union, we are not going to say teachers must go back and then they must contract the disease. We must look at the state and health of the teachers because we cannot now say that all teachers are safe." 


"We are in level three where the virus is very high and if we look at the department itself, they are at home working through the visuals and think that teachers should go back, and that is being unfair on them."
