The National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa wants to approach the Basic EducationDepartment to look at the possibility of working in practical safety precautions into the curriculum.
It comes as a number of children are missing in the province and other parts of the country - some of whom disappeared months ago.
On Monday, the badly decomposed body of a child in school uniform was found in Phoenix.
While the search for a Pietermaritzburg teenager - that's entered its third day - is ongoing.
Naptosa's Thirona Moodley says it's important to teach children how to stay safe.
She says teachers can help curb child abductions.
"Teachers have been trained to deal with sensitive issues. So we have the skill, we have the time and the audience with these learners. We must exploit this opportunity and encourage them to understand what it is that could possibly happen to them," she said.
