Updated | By Lauren Beukes
A teachers union has called on the Education Department to heighten security at schools.

This is after a KwaMakhutha principal was stabbed by an ex-pupil at Umkhumbi High School this week.
It is understood that the 21-year-old suspect was trying to re-register for matric when he stabbed the principal in the leg.

"This has been an ongoing issue regarding security in the province and Naptosa has raised this so many times with the Department and MEC - that our people, employees, principals, teachers and learners are not safe in school.
"We really need to take their security and safety seriously because we cannot have people walking into a school and attack a principal, teacher, learner or even a parent. The situation has become untenable and we cannot have our teachers teaching in fear."
