Name change on cards for southern KZN Municipality

A name change is on the cards for the Umzimkhulu Local Municipality in southern KZN. The ANC in the province says officials in that region want to honour the late Sindiso Magaqa.

The former secretary general of the ANC Youth League was murdered in Umzimkhulu three years ago.

When the issue of protecting whistle blowers came up at the Moerane Commission of Inquiry into political killings,  his murder was in the spotlight.

Some party members believe he'd lifted the lid on alleged corruption at the municipality.

One of those who has been ever vocal was his closest friend, Thabiso Zulu, whose testimony rocked the Moerane Commission.

He would later express that he'd received numerous death threats.

Zulu also went on national television where he revealed that despite a report by the Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, which supported his claim he was yet to be afforded protection by the police ministry.

The events shed light into the victimisation whistleblowers are subjected to as well as the slow pace by those meant to protect them.

It further highlighted that this made people with information reluctant to come forward meaning those who could be held accountable are free to do as they please.

The ANC's provincial secretary, Mdumiseni Ntuli. says the name Umzimkhulu is a very old name.

"Popularly known and if you change the municipality to any of our own living or departed comrades it’s important that there must be a proper canvassing of that idea with various sectors of society and organs of civil society in the area," he said.
