Three suspects were shot dead by police and two others arrested following a multi-vehicle crash in the vicinity of Queen Nandi Drive - north of the city.

The N2 freeway was closed for several hours yesterday as police combed the crime scene following the crash.

Police spotted a vehicle - thought to have been hijacked in Reservoir Hills earlier in the week - and gave chase - heading north.

Police say the suspects tried to push the officers off the road and both vehicles crashed onto the southbound carriageway.

A woman in a private vehicle was caught up in the crash and had to be cut from the wreckage before being taken to hospital.

These motorists have told Newswatch what they saw unfolding on the road before them.

"Everything just came to a dead stop. And the police were running with machine guns in between the cars. And the dogs came running. Because they were shooting," one woman said.

"Everybody just got out of their vehicles. We were told to stand back because there were two of them in the veld," another motorist said.

Forensic experts who went through the contents of the suspects' vehicle yesterday evening found several firearms and number plates - believed to be fake.
