Yesterday, students barricaded Mangosuthi Highway over non-payment of book and food allowances.

This third year student is one of those affected.

"We haven't been allocated our meal finances or book allowances. We are unable to buy any text books and we don't have any money to buy meals. Management has placed a notice telling everyone to vacate campus until further notice," he says.

Meanwhile, SRC president, Sandile Dlamini says they are meeting with management again today.

"We are not going back to classes until our students have received their allowances. We just need them to make a commitment to say at least by the end of a certain day - people will receive their allowances ," he says.

In a statement, the university says since changing to a new NSFAS allowance service provider - only 3000 students out of the 7000 students who qualify for funding have provided the service with their banking details.

The university says the remaining 4000 students should urgently provide officials with their banking details to avoid further delays in the payment of allowances.
