Music icon Joseph Shabalala remembered at memorial service

Hundreds of people descended on the Durban Playhouse to pay tribute to Joseph Shabalala.

A memorial service was held in the city this afternoon for the Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder who passed away following a long illness last week.

It's was an emotional day for those who have come out to celebrate the life of Shabalala.
The Playhouse Theatre was packed with close family fans, friends from around the world.
Shabalala will be remembered for his contribution to the music industry as the founder of the Ladysmith Black Mambazo and for rooting the music culture of Isicathamiya.

Among the speakers on the programme was close friend, American children's advocate, Stanley Brady as well as some of Shabalala's children.
Brady and Shabalala's friendship began in the late nineties. He's described Shabalala as a man who took South Africa to the world stage.
