Murdered wedding venue owner remembered as kind, generous

The family of the wedding venue owner who was shot dead during an armed robbery in Umhlali at the weekend - are struggling to come to terms with their loss.

- while trying to protect friends and family who'd gathered for a braai at the Maroupi Wedding Venue. 


The others were tied up and their valuables stolen. The venue was not being used for any functions at the time.

Tributes and condolences have been pouring in for the 62-year-old - with some couples who were married at Maroupi sharing their experiences of him on the venue's Facebook page. 


Family spokesperson, Cameron Gordon, says Deyzel had tried to protect his guests - when he was shot and killed. 


"They cut the fence, they came in, they fired one warning shot, then Marius - being the guy that he is - rushed to defend all his friends that were with him, and they then shot him, and he passed away after that," he said.

Gordon says Deyzel always put other people first.


"Marius was one of the kindest people I've met. He thought about everyone else first, he helped everyone. I think that's why what happened -on Saturday night happened - he tried to protect his friends and his guests, and paid with his life," he said. 


Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane, says a case of murder has been opened at the Umhlali  Police Station. No arrests have been made.
