Murdered Tongaat grandmother case postponed

A 14-year-old girl who allegedly murdered her grandmother at their Tongaat home will apply for bail next week.

The child, who police initially said was 13, made her first appearance in the Child Justice Court at Verulam Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. 


The girl's 63-year-old grandmother was bludgeoned to death in her Fairbreeze home this week.

Court officials say the matter against the child who will be considered for bail has been postponed. 


She faces a charge of murder and for now, will be held in a place of safety.


Initially, when police were called to the scene, the girl said that she was hanging clothes on a line outside when she heard her granny screaming.

The teen told police that when she ran into the home, she found a man with a hammer in his hand. 


She tried to stop him from attacking her grandmother, but he pushed her out the door. 


She told police that, at this point, she ran to get help. She returned to find her grandmother's body. 


The woman suffered several blows to her head. 


Officers arrested the child, a day later, when her mother brought her into the police station.
